Paper Bag Handle Types Compared

Buying Guide · Updated September 2026 · 6 min read

The handle is the first thing a customer touches and the first thing that fails if it is specified badly. It also changes your unit cost more than most buyers expect — and it changes what the bag says about your brand. Here is how the five common handle types actually compare.

The short answer

Two bags can share the same board weight, size and printing and still behave completely differently in a customer's hand, purely because of the handle. If load capacity matters, say so before you see a quotation — not after the sample arrives.

The five handle types

Twisted paper handle

Rolled twisted-paper cord, threaded through punched holes and usually held by a glued paper patch inside the top edge. It is the default on kraft retail and grocery bags worldwide: inexpensive, entirely paper-based and therefore straightforward to recycle, and it takes a bag's own colours or a contrasting shade easily. The trade-off is comfort — a thin twisted cord digs into the hand when the bag is heavy, and a knot can sit awkwardly against the palm.

Flat paper handle

The same idea, but with a flat folded paper strip. The wider surface spreads the load across the hand, which makes a noticeable difference on anything remotely heavy, and it reads a step smarter than a twisted cord. It costs slightly more in material and attachment, and it genuinely improves the carrying experience — which is why takeaway and fashion retail tend to specify it.

Cotton and rope handles

Soft, strong and the most comfortable option for heavy merchandise. Rope handles are usually threaded through reinforced eyelets or a card patch, so the attachment point — not the handle — becomes the part to engineer properly. Cost is higher than paper, and there is an end-of-life caveat worth being honest about: a cotton or polypropylene rope handle is not paper, so a bag carrying one is not a single-material product. Polypropylene rope in particular is not paper-recyclable.

Ribbon handles

Satin or grosgrain ribbon, either glued into a folded top edge or knotted through holes. This is the luxury retail default — gift, cosmetics, jewellery, premium fashion — and it is the handle that most obviously signals "present". Ribbons are easy to match to a printed colour, and the folded-edge version gives a very clean interior. Expect a higher cost than paper handles, and a lower working load: ribbon is a design choice more than an engineering one, and it should not be specified for heavy contents.

Die-cut handles

The handle is cut out of the bag itself — no extra material, no extra attachment step, and the lowest cost of any option. Common on food-service bags and light retail. Load capacity is limited, the cut edges benefit from being rounded rather than left square, and the handle position has to be planned into the dieline from the start rather than added later.

Load capacity here is a working guide, not a specification. It depends on board weight, bag size, bottom construction, glue and how the handle is attached — a 250 gsm bag with a ribbon handle is a very different object from a 250 gsm bag with reinforced rope handles.

What actually determines how much it carries

If load matters, test it. Tell us the packed weight and contents you need to carry and we will build the sample to that brief — then you can load it and walk around with it before mass production starts. That test costs nothing; a failed handle in a retail chain costs a great deal.

Matching the handle to the brand

A sustainable, plastic-free story

Twisted or flat paper handles keep the bag a single material. If you claim recyclability, this is the combination that holds up under scrutiny — including at the disposal stage.

Everyday retail that has to work

Flat paper handles. They cost a fraction more than twisted cord and customers notice the difference on the walk to the car.

Gifting and unboxing

Ribbon on white card, with a folded top edge. The bag becomes part of the presentation rather than something that carries it.

Heavy or awkward merchandise

Rope handles, a reinforced top card and a board-reinforced base. Specify the packed weight and let the construction follow it.

How we quote handles

We are the export team behind a publicly listed Chinese paper packaging manufacturer. Tell us the contents, the packed weight, the bag size and any colour requirement, and the quotation will show the handle options side by side so you can see what each one costs you per piece — rather than one price with the handle hidden inside it. MOQ from 5,000 pcs, free pre-production sample in about 7 days, and a written quotation within one working day.

Not sure which handle fits your product?

Send the packed weight and the bag size — we will quote the handle options side by side, with a sample you can load-test.
